St. Juvenaly and his Companion Orthodox Church in Wasilla, Alaska serves the Matanuska-Susitna Valley as the a direct descendant of St. Innocent’s original mission to the Mat-Su Valley and Upper Knick Arm and a continuation of the Saint Lazarus Orthodox Mission in Palmer, Alaska (founded 1986).
We are a Pan-Alaskan Orthodox Church of the Orthodox Diocese of Sitka and Alaska proclaiming the Gospel of our Lord, God, and Savior Jesus Christ in Wasilla, Palmer, Fishhook, Fairview Houston, and Big Lake, Alaska.
Our services are held primarily in English with a mixture of Slavonic, Unangam Tunuu (Aleut), Yupik, and Tlingit to enable us to serve our Alaska Native parishioners.
A Brief History of the Orthodox Church in Wasilla-Palmer, Alaska
The history of the Orthodox Mission to the Mat-Su Valley begins in 1850 with the foundation of Saint Nicholas Orthodox Church in Knick, Alaska. Saint Nicholas was moved from Knick, building and all, in 1897 and, by the early 1980s, people in the Palmer and Wasilla areas recognized the need for an Orthodox Church in the Mat-Su Valley.
A group of pious people founded the St. Lazarus Orthodox Mission in the Palmer/Wasilla area in 1986 and, by approximately 2009/10, it was noted that much of the congregation at Eklutna was also commuting from the Palmer-Wasilla area. With the blessing of Archbishop +BENJAMIN of San Francisco (locum tenens of the Diocese of Sitka & Alaska) Saint Juvenaly & his Companion Mission was founded in 2011, combining the congregations of St. Lazarus Orthodox Mission in Palmer and St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Eklutna to form Saint Juvenaly & his Companion Orthodox Church here in Wasilla Alaska. The land was blessed in 2012 and the building was constructed in 2013.
Currently, our growing parish is raising funds to construct a parish hall to further the mission of proclaiming Alaskan Orthodoxy in the Mat-Su Valley of Alaska!
