The Vasilopita is a Balkan and Greek tradition. In Greece, St. Basil the Great brings gifts to the children and the people eat a rich bread with a coin baked into the center. According to tradition, St. Basil gave charity in this manner. By giving people a loaf of bread with a gold coin baked inside, he was able to offer alms to the poor in secret.
